Is self defense illegal in Britain?

She was cautioned for wielding an offensive weapon not self defence. She could have used the knife only if she was threatened and in fear of her life. That is the point that she would have to rush to the kitchen, select a knife and then defend herself. Of course by then she could be dead. This country is really going too far in the protection of criminals.
