US Judicial System: Are the jurors really chosen from the public even to handle criminal trials like OJ case?

I watched Larry King last night and I think one of the guest lawyers said so. I mean, is it true?? How can this be? I do hope the jurors go through a grueling interview before they are confirmed for jury duty.
