I'm having trouble with a very old laptop, the floppy disk drive won't work?

I'm using a Compaq Armada 1560DM and every time I try to save a word doc to a floppy disk (it's my only means of moving work from the laptop computer to my desktop computer which has internet access and a printer) I get the message, Check the drive to make sure the door is closed and it contains the crrect disk or CD, or something along the lines of cannot write to the specified disk. Please help, I have a three thousand word story on here that I don't feel like re typing.
